Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share your information when you use Mejl. Mejl is a Gmail-based email client operated by Niels Segers BV, a Belgian private limited company with VAT number BE 1011.064.058. In this policy, “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to Niels Segers BV.
Information we access
When you connect a Google account, we access the Google user data needed to provide Mejl:

Your Google account ID, email address, name, and profile picture.

Your Gmail messages, attachments, drafts, labels, filters, and related mailbox information.

Actions you take in Mejl, such as organizing mail, changing labels, saving drafts, and sending messages.
How we use Google user data
We use Google user data only to provide and maintain Mejl's email features:

Display, search, organize, draft, and send mail when you use those features.

Create and synchronize the Gmail labels, filters, and rules you configure.

Keep your mailbox and label-based inboxes up to date.

Protect, troubleshoot, and maintain the service.
We do not sell Google user data or use it for advertising, credit decisions, or training generalized AI models.
Our use and transfer of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
AI features
We use AI service providers through Vercel AI Gateway for writing and automatic labeling features. Writing tools process the text you select. Automatic labeling processes relevant message content, sender and recipient information, and label information. We use this data only to provide these features and instruct our AI providers not to use it for model training.
What we store
We store limited information needed to operate Mejl:

Your connected account information and encrypted Google OAuth tokens.

Your settings, label information, mailbox sync state, sessions, and operational records.

Push notification tokens and short-lived delivery records when notifications are enabled.

Stripe customer, subscription, and billing-status information for Mejl Plus.

An address list stored locally on your device or browser for recipient suggestions. It is cleared when you sign out or delete your account.
We read message bodies and attachments from Gmail when needed to display them or provide a feature. We do not sell message content or provide it to advertisers.
Payments and Mejl Plus
Stripe provides checkout, payment processing, fraud prevention, invoicing, tax calculation, subscription management, and the billing portal for Mejl Plus. We receive the customer and subscription information needed to provide Plus and meet our legal obligations. We do not receive or store your full card details or automatically send your Google identity to Stripe.
Invoice and credit-note documents are sent through email delivery and accounting providers for our internal accounting. They may contain billing, transaction, and tax information, but not Gmail message content. Stripe and these providers may process data outside the EEA using appropriate transfer safeguards where required.
Support requests
When you contact us, we process the information you provide and limited technical and device information needed to respond, troubleshoot, secure, and improve the service.
Support messages are delivered through the email providers used by you and us. Our providers may process data outside the EEA using appropriate safeguards. Do not include passwords or unnecessary email content. We keep support requests for up to 24 months after the last activity unless they are needed longer for legal, security, or support reasons.
Remote images and tracking protection
We remove remote images that look like obvious tracking pixels. Other images load directly from their host without a referrer, so the host may receive your IP address and device information and may infer that you opened the email. Our filter reduces, but cannot prevent, all email tracking.
Sharing and disclosure
We do not sell personal data. We share data only as needed to provide, maintain, secure, and comply with the service, including with:

Google, when we access and update your Gmail account with your permission.

AI, billing, accounting, support, hosting, security, and other service providers acting on our behalf.

Remote image hosts when your device loads images contained in an email.

Authorities or other parties when required by law or needed to protect rights and safety.
Security
We use technical and organizational safeguards, including encrypted OAuth token storage, HTTPS, server-side sessions, and access controls. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to prevent unauthorized access, loss, misuse, and alteration.
Retention and deletion
We keep Google user data for as long as needed to provide and secure Mejl, maintain your account, and meet legal obligations. You can revoke our access from your Google Account settings at any time.
You can delete your account from Settings. We then delete the account, authentication, settings, synchronization, notification, and subscription-link records unless they must be kept for legal or security reasons. A renewing Mejl Plus subscription must be canceled first.
Payment, tax, and accounting records are kept as required by law. Belgian rules generally require relevant invoices and supporting documents to be kept for 10 years. Our providers may also retain data under their terms, our instructions, or their legal obligations.
Your choices and rights

You can revoke Google access, manage your Gmail data directly in Gmail, and delete your Mejl account from Settings.

You can manage or cancel Mejl Plus through the billing portal or [email protected].

Subject to applicable law, you can request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or portability of your personal data, or object to certain processing.

You may lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority or your local supervisory authority.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when Mejl, our data practices, or legal requirements change. If we materially change how we use Google user data, we will update this policy and ask for consent where required before using it for the new purpose.
