Notion Mail shut down on September 22, 2026. It was always a layer on top of Gmail, so your sent and received mail is still in your Gmail account. What didn’t carry over is the way Notion Mail organized it: the custom views and the auto-label rules that sorted new mail into them.
So the real question is which Gmail client gives you that organization back. We compared five Notion Mail alternatives that work with Gmail, and checked every plan and price on the vendor’s own pages.
We looked at each alternative across the things Notion Mail users tell us they miss:
No single alternative wins at everything, so we’ll be upfront about where each one shines and where it falls short.
TLDR? Here are our top picks for Notion Mail alternatives:
All Notion Mail alternatives at a quick glance:
| Alternative | Best for | Custom views | Automatic sorting | Free plan | Paid plans from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mejl | Getting Notion Mail’s views back on Gmail | Your own views, each a Gmail label with an unread count | Gmail filter rules, plus AI sorting for 10 emails a day | Yes, the whole client | $4.99/month for Mejl Plus |
| Gmail | Staying in Gmail with nothing new to learn | Five fixed categories | Filters by sender, subject, or words; no AI labels | Yes, with 15 GB of storage | $1.99/month for more storage |
| Superhuman | Fast, keyboard-first email with a budget for it | Split Inbox, with custom splits | AI Auto Labels; custom labels on Business | No | $25/month billed yearly, or $30/month |
| Shortwave | Asking an AI assistant about your mail | Splits that turn labels into tabs, basic on Free | AI filters and AI organization on paid plans | Yes, with 90 days of search | $14/month billed yearly, or $18/month |
| Spark | Several accounts in one unified inbox | Smart Inbox with fixed groups | No automatic labels; use Gmail filters | Yes, with unlimited accounts | $99/year, or $10/month |
Mejl is the Gmail client we build at mejl.cc. It’s a separate app that connects to your Gmail account, not an extension that runs inside Gmail. It works on the web, iOS, and Android, and opens the mail already in Gmail, so there’s nothing to import.
Each focused view is a Gmail label with its own unread count, so you can read one kind of mail at a time and clear it. Gmail filter rules sort new mail by sender, subject, or phrase. For mail that exact rules can’t match, you describe what belongs in a view and sorting by description uses AI to apply the label. That’s the closest match to Notion Mail’s auto-label instructions on this list.
| Free plan | Paid plans from |
|---|---|
| Yes, the whole client | $4.99/month for Mejl Plus |
The free plan is the whole Gmail client, with no time limit and no credit card. It includes focused views, unlimited Gmail filter rules, and AI sorting by description for 10 emails a day. Mejl Plus costs $4.99/month or $44.99/year. It removes the daily sorting limit and adds thread summaries, writing tools, and reply suggestions.
Mejl works with Gmail and Google Workspace only, so it’s not an option for Outlook or IMAP. It doesn’t sync mail into Notion databases, and it can’t import your Notion Mail views; you recreate them once. If you use several Google accounts, you switch between them, because there’s no combined inbox.
Gmail is where your mail already lives. After Notion Mail, it’s the default choice: free, familiar, and in every browser and on iOS and Android.
Gmail has real labels, and filters can send mail to a label, archive it, or star it based on the sender, subject, or words in the message. The inbox sorts mail into five fixed categories: Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums.
| Free plan | Paid plans from |
|---|---|
| Yes, with 15 GB of storage | $1.99/month for more storage |
Gmail is free with every Google account, which includes 15 GB of storage shared with Drive and Photos. AI Overview thread summaries are free. If you run out of space, Google One starts at $1.99/month for 100 GB, but that plan doesn’t add Gemini in Gmail.
Gmail has no custom views with their own unread counts and no AI labels. Inbox categories are fixed, so you can turn them on or off but can’t make your own. If you liked Notion Mail because it hid everything except one kind of mail, Gmail won’t give you that.
Superhuman is a fast, keyboard-first email client for Gmail and Outlook. Its mail app is now part of a wider product family that includes Docs, Go, and agents.
Split Inbox separates your mail into sections, and custom splits use search criteria and Auto Labels. Auto Labels classify new mail with AI. On Business and Enterprise, custom labels can combine AI prompts with exact rules such as sender and subject.
| Free plan | Paid plans from |
|---|---|
| No | $25/month billed yearly, or $30/month |
Superhuman has no free plan. Starter costs $30/month, or $25/month billed annually. Custom Auto Labels are part of Business, which costs $40/month, or $33/month billed annually.
It’s the most expensive option here, and there’s no free plan to try your old Notion Mail setup on. Custom AI labels, the feature closest to Notion Mail’s auto-label instructions, need the Business plan.
Shortwave is a Gmail client built around AI. It connects natively to Gmail and Google Workspace, and lets you ask an AI assistant about your mail.
Labels sync with Gmail. Splits turn labels into inbox tabs, bundles group threads into a single inbox item, and delivery schedules control when a label’s mail arrives. AI filters can label new mail from a plain-language description.
| Free plan | Paid plans from |
|---|---|
| Yes, with 90 days of search | $14/month billed yearly, or $18/month |
Shortwave’s free plan limits search to the last 90 days and adds a “Sent with Shortwave” signature to your mail. AI runs on a basic model with a limited usage quota. Pro costs $18/month, or $14/month billed yearly, and adds unlimited search history and a larger AI allowance. Business plans start at $30 per seat a month.
The features that come closest to Notion Mail, AI inbox organization and AI filters, need a paid plan. On the free plan, splits are basic only, and every email you send carries Shortwave’s signature.
Spark from Readdle is an email app for macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android. It handles Gmail next to other providers and puts every account in one unified inbox, even on the free plan.
Spark supports Gmail labels, and syncs any labels your Gmail filters apply. Its Smart Inbox separates priority mail from the rest, and snooze, send later, and reminders are all free.
| Free plan | Paid plans from |
|---|---|
| Yes, with unlimited accounts | $99/year, or $10/month |
Spark’s free plan includes unlimited email accounts and a unified inbox. Its AI assistant is a limited preview that only sees one month of email history. Spark Plus costs $10/month or $99/year and adds the full AI assistant, AI drafting, and summaries. Pro costs $20/month or $199/year.
Spark can’t apply Gmail labels automatically, and its Smart Inbox groups are fixed. If you relied on Notion Mail to sort mail into views you defined, you’ll need to rebuild that with Gmail filters.
We hope this guide helps you pick the right Notion Mail alternative. This article is written by Mejl, the Gmail client at mejl.cc. Mejl has a free plan, you don’t need a credit card, and you sign in with Google to start.
